Juanita Jo Jones, 32, was shot 11/13/89 at the Circle K convenience store on E Highway 80 in Haughton, Louisiana. She was unable to describe the assailant(s) before succumbing to her injuries 11/18/89.
Juanita completed a four-year stint in the US Army soon after graduating from Haughton High School in Benton. She had a passion for cooking and worked two jobs with plans of operating a small restaurant full-time. She’d leased a modest space in a prime location, and had already submitted her resignation to Circle K. As a tribute to Juanita’s memory, her mother Addie operated Down Home Barbeque for decades.
Her younger brother Robert fondly recalls her being a “mother figure” to him and their brothers.1 She’s interred at Camp Zion Cemetery in Haughton.2
Crime Scene
A customer discovered Juanita around 10:30 pm 11/13/89, just minutes after a State Trooper left the store. She was seriously injured with a gunshot wound to the head. She died five days later on 11/18/89 at Bossier Medical Center.
The cash – $65.34 – was missing from the open register. Authorities believe the perpetrator knew her work pattern, and may have been familiar with the area and the store.3 There were no surveillance cameras in the store.
A witness in the the general vicinity reported hearing a muffled shot and squealing tires as the suspect(s) sped away. However, the witness was unable to describe the suspect or the make/model of the vehicle.4
